I asked an old friend if he would buy these invitations and stickers for inviting family and friends for a Christmas family reunion. He returned to Portugal two years ago but lived in the USA for most part of his life. After looking at the invitations, António told me that "azulejos" have always held a special place in his life. His house that belonged to his father once, has tiles inside and outside, very old ones. Tiles are a piece of Portugal's rich cultural heritage, he said. Then, I  asked him: imagine that you are still living in Massachusetts and organizing a family reunion dinner party. Would you consider buying products with a Portuguese-inspired tile pattern for a Christmas dinner party celebration? He answered: The tile is not something that is linked to Christmas, but it means a lot to us. And these are very beautiful, discreet... It is something that is very traditional, but also different, as at Christmas we expect the usual motifs, whether religious or fantasy.

When I designed this pattern and incorporated it into the Christmas products I also thought it would be a different bet. But why not? It felt right. These were my thoughts!

1. Tiles express a connection to Portugal's Cultural heritage: The "azulejo" design, derived from the Arabic phrase "small polished stone," has a deep-rooted history in Portugal. These ceramic tiles have adorned the interiors and exteriors of centuries-old structures, making them an integral part of our country's architectural heritage. By incorporating this pattern, I paid homage to my Portuguese roots and celebrated the artistry of my ancestors. I felt others might appreciate it!

2. Blue and Yellow are evocative colors for Portuguese people:
Blue and yellow are more than just colors in the azulejo pattern; they represent a harmonious blend of nature and artistry. The deep blue, reminiscent of the Atlantic Ocean, is contrasted by the warm yellow, symbolizing the sun's radiant light. Together, they create a mesmerizing interplay of colors that evokes the beauty of our homeland.

3. Genuine inspiration from real Portuguese tiles: The seamless tile pattern draws inspiration from the enchanting Porto district, where I took a photo of a similar tile. With botanical elements dancing around the blue and yellow hues, these tiles are pretty and inspired by real ones, not just abstract creations.

4. The tiles of Portugal are for everyone:  my choice of products featuring the azulejo pattern isn't limited to please Portuguese natives or descendants. The greeting card is perfect for sending warm wishes to Portuguese friends, family members, Portuguese Americans, or anyone who appreciates Portuguese traditions and the timeless beauty of azulejos. This pattern transcends boundaries and resonates with all who encounter its charm.

5. Tiles are a symbol of the connection across Time and Generations: Just as the azulejo pattern has transcended time and tradition to become a part of contemporary aesthetics, a family reunion bridges the generations, bringing together loved ones, young and old, from near and far. When people are away from home, as they gather to celebrate Christmas with loved ones, they do so with a deep sense of pride in their Portuguese heritage too, serving old family recipes, telling stories from Portugal, singing Portuguese songs, and more. The tile is therefore an element that symbolizes this connection.

From family reunion invitations to tableware and thoughtful presents,  this pattern will help in creating a festive atmosphere that honors tradition, embraces artistry, and welcomes all to share in the magic of the holiday season.
