New Year's Eve in Porto with Santa and the Rooster Card
Porto, often dubbed the capital of Port Wine, welcomes the New Year with great fervor. Just before midnight, people near the Clérigos Tower clock, look up, eagerly awaiting the stroke of midnight. The new year has arrived! Bottles of Champagne are uncorked, and toasts are raised near the city's most iconic tower and everywhere. It looks like the Portuguese Rooster prefers to toast with Port Wine and Santa Claus isn't shy about it either!
For those who know me, it's no secret that my favorite Portuguese city is Porto. It's where I flock to celebrate São João in June, one of Portugal's and perhaps Europe's grandest street festivals. Among the most unforgettable moments during these festivities is the dazzling fireworks display on the D. Luiz Bridge spanning the Douro River. The skies of the city once again ignite with fireworks on New Year's Eve, presenting a breathtaking spectacle complete with mesmerizing light effects and live music. The enchantment of the show prevails, and the cold weather hardly deters anyone since the streets come alive. Thousands of locals and tourists alike converge in front of Porto City Hall on Avenida dos Aliados, the city's epicenter for all major events.
If you come to Portugal for New Year's Eve these are the formulaic salutation of the occasion!
Feliz Ano Novo! - Happy New Year!
Bom Ano Novo - Have a good year!
Próspero ano novo - Have a Prosperous New Year!
Desejo-te um feliz Ano Novo! - I wish you a Happy New Year!
