Wooden toys with love

Oficina do Alfredo is a family project. We use local sustainable resources and our manufacturing is characterized by handmade and small series.Our goal is to make genuine objects, made by people, with tools that help Man instead of replacing him. Creating soulful toys, wooden toys that can always be repaired and passed from generation to generation, and even become collector’s items. A child’s interaction with these toys opens the doors to their imagination, the possibility of personalizing and repairing them, awakens the creativity and sense of conscience that things shouldn’t all be disposable. Stimulating an ecological stance of conservation through play.

Blog Action Day - Food - A community farm project at Oporto

Video Musas

This project came to my knowledge in the Summer. It's a biodynamic and organic community sustained agriculture project in the middle of Oporto city. It shows us a new way to organize food production. As today is Blog Action Day and we're all discussing FOOD, it seemed the right day to show this video. Francisco Flórido is explaining all about this project. I am sorry but there are no subtitles in English. But you can just take a look at it and read about it bellow to get the idea.

The Fontinha Muses Farm is a space provided by Space Muses-section cultural, civic and recreational Sport Muses and Benfica institution. The project (or the idea to use the outer space) has existed since 2004. Several sessions of cleaning involving the removal of large amounts of waste and "monsters" on the ground were performed. In January 2009 |finally reached the end of the ground after removing tons of trash. They had to deal with uncontrolled growth of vegetation and subsequent weed infestation. In 2010, decided to clean up this new area and make a common space for people to grow tomatoes, radishes, cabbage and lettuce, cucumbers, beets, carrots, onions, among others. In 2011, the continued interest of members in this project led to extend it to a greater number of partners. This is happening in the center of Oporto's city.

This is a project run by the people. Institutions are out. No politics, no interests, no fuss. No markets. Just a couple of simple rules.

1. The common proposals and/or actions that relate to "Fontinha Muses Farm" on the whole, must be discussed and decided by the Assembly by consensus.
2 - The agricultural techniques that members use must respect the concepts of organic agriculture and permaculture or biodynamic agriculture;
3 - Each member must feed the composter with organic waste brought from home;
4 - Each member has to cooperate with the cleanliness of their lot and common spaces;
5 - They promote regular training, workshops, concerts, festivals, fairs, and other events in order to broaden the dissemination, sharing knowledge, creating fellowship and raise funds for expenditure;
6 - The tools left for common use by the participants must be maintained and kept in good repair by users;
7 - In community work sessions the tools have to be abandoned at the meeting point set, and in the end always saved in the defined location;
8 - The interior space of the Fontinha Muses Farm must be kept clean by the participants.

More than a hundred volunteers work at the farm. The soil has owners. The project mentors talked to the owners and tried to get their permission. Many owners found it interesting and useful that abandoned land could be alive again. Teachers and students, people from all kinds of social background and education, joined this project. Finally, people that dreamed about having a little land to grow some vegetables got the chance to do it. Anyone can create a workshop about something they know, for example, how to deal with a bonsai, and share the knowledge. The group also help people who undergo difficulties, for example, a person that lives in a poor house. They all rebuilding it together. This action happened almost spontaneously but that does not mean that the project is not planned. They are trying to obtain water from the rain and old wells that are buried in the ground because the city water is expensive. They are also making an effort to promote cooperative and biological agriculture because this can improve the quality of life of the city where people live.

I would like very much to grow my own food. I am not vegetarian but I eat lots of green things and fruit. If I could I would trade my house in the city for a small house with a little land somewhere. What do you think about this idea? Do you know any project like this in your city?

Support your local artists

"The holiday season is quickly approaching, and while some people start their Christmas shopping on December 26th, others put it off until they absolutely have to shop. The reasons for waiting for range from not having the money to start the shopping, to the thrill of the last minute shopping, to the loathing of stepping into a mall or big chain store. This year, and every year, really, I'd like to encourage everyone to skip the mall and the discount chain stores and go support your local artists, or other independent artists, who sell their designs and wares at craft fairs, consignment shops, or online at places like Zazzle, Fine Art America, Cafe Press, and other print on demand sites. Not only will you be supporting artists that do what they love even though the money does not always share their passion, but you will be buying gifts for yourself or others that are unique and in some cases, customizable. The artists you support might be professionals or amateurs, full-time workers or retirees, stay at home moms and dads, or people with illnesses or disabilities. No matter the background, all of them have a love of art and design and they all appreciate the support of those who purchase their heart and soul. Thank you on behalf of all the artists and designers I proudly call my friends and family. The artist community is a tight knit one and one I feel blessed to be a part of. Thank you for reading from Rdwnggrl's World."

I subscribe to these words.

If you do also, share this post and this idea from Rdwnggrl's World

Harold Hunter's Re-food non-profit anti-hunger project

Today I bring to my blog a social issue. I worked as a social worker for several years so I am sensitive to these kinds of actions. Harold Hunter is an American and he lives in Lisbon. Watch him collecting food from restaurants and riding his bike on Lisbon streets. He and all volunteers use a bike to deliver food. Yes, as he says, hunger on the streets of Lisbon, unlike Africa's hunger, hurts the spirit more than the belly. He has sixty volunteers. The man in the white shirt was homeless so he knows where the needed people live and has an important role in the project. The woman with fur coat once had a good life but before this help arrived she and her kids were eating just rice and pasta for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They adequate food to each person's type, food for the young is different from food for the old people. If people don't want to give their name because they are ashamed of their condition they respect that.Lots of dignity and solidarity in this action and an example that can be implemented in any city, in Portugal or in the world.

Re-food is the name of the project. It's a non-profit project, founded as an instrument to facilitate the redirection of un-served left-over food to hungry people. Re-food is not looking for monetary donations. All they seek is volunteers and material. The project aims to reduce hunger in urban environments by redirecting un-served, left-over food directly to the hungry people closest to the donating sources.

The project seeks to enlist local "sources" of prepared meals and secure their daily "over-production" to be delivered immediately to hungry people in the same locale who do not have the means to purchase food. Creating a "human bridge" that will connect those who have a daily surplus with those who have a daily need is the primary function of the re-food team - collecting and delivering by bicycle each day.
The project was developed in Lisbon, Portugal during 2010. Only in early 2011, it was realized that that work had already been done - by António Costa Pereira who singlehandedly moved the status quo to a new and, we hope, receptive attitude. Everyone is talking about Re-food and chances are that many will join to help. Portugal faces troubled times and in the short future, many will need this precious help that feeds not only the body but also hope.
