Support your local artists

"The holiday season is quickly approaching, and while some people start their Christmas shopping on December 26th, others put it off until they absolutely have to shop. The reasons for waiting for range from not having the money to start the shopping, to the thrill of the last minute shopping, to the loathing of stepping into a mall or big chain store. This year, and every year, really, I'd like to encourage everyone to skip the mall and the discount chain stores and go support your local artists, or other independent artists, who sell their designs and wares at craft fairs, consignment shops, or online at places like Zazzle, Fine Art America, Cafe Press, and other print on demand sites. Not only will you be supporting artists that do what they love even though the money does not always share their passion, but you will be buying gifts for yourself or others that are unique and in some cases, customizable. The artists you support might be professionals or amateurs, full-time workers or retirees, stay at home moms and dads, or people with illnesses or disabilities. No matter the background, all of them have a love of art and design and they all appreciate the support of those who purchase their heart and soul. Thank you on behalf of all the artists and designers I proudly call my friends and family. The artist community is a tight knit one and one I feel blessed to be a part of. Thank you for reading from Rdwnggrl's World."

I subscribe to these words.

Harold Hunter's Re-food non-profit anti-hunger project

Today I bring to my blog a social issue. I worked as a social worker for several years so I am sensitive to these kinds of actions. Harold Hunter is an American and he lives in Lisbon. Watch him collecting food from restaurants and riding his bike on Lisbon streets. He and all volunteers use a bike to deliver food. Yes, as he says, hunger on the streets of Lisbon, unlike Africa's hunger, hurts the spirit more than the belly. He has sixty volunteers. The man in the white shirt was homeless so he knows where the needed people live and has an important role in the project. The woman with fur coat once had a good life but before this help arrived she and her kids were eating just rice and pasta for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They adequate food to each person's type, food for the young is different from food for the old people. If people don't want to give their name because they are ashamed of their condition they respect that.Lots of dignity and solidarity in this action and an example that can be implemented in any city, in Portugal or in the world.

Re-food is the name of the project. It's a non-profit project, founded as an instrument to facilitate the redirection of un-served left-over food to hungry people. Re-food is not looking for monetary donations. All they seek is volunteers and material. The project aims to reduce hunger in urban environments by redirecting un-served, left-over food directly to the hungry people closest to the donating sources.

The project seeks to enlist local "sources" of prepared meals and secure their daily "over-production" to be delivered immediately to hungry people in the same locale who do not have the means to purchase food. Creating a "human bridge" that will connect those who have a daily surplus with those who have a daily need is the primary function of the re-food team - collecting and delivering by bicycle each day.
The project was developed in Lisbon, Portugal during 2010. Only in early 2011, it was realized that that work had already been done - by António Costa Pereira who singlehandedly moved the status quo to a new and, we hope, receptive attitude. Everyone is talking about Re-food and chances are that many will join to help. Portugal faces troubled times and in the short future, many will need this precious help that feeds not only the body but also hope.

Please, read all text here.

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is where you can watch The Invention of Glory: Afonso V and the Pastrana Tapestries. The Pastrana Tapestries will remain at the museum from September 18, 2011, through January 8, 2012. They are among the finest Gothic tapestries in the world. They were made to commemorate the conquest of two strategically located cities in Morocco by the king of Portugal, Afonso V (1432–1481).

The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery and the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, Madrid in association with the embassies of Spain and Portugal, the Spain-USA Foundation, and with the cooperation of the embassies of Belgium and Morocco in Washington, DC, as well as the Diocese of Sigüenza-Guadalajara and the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Pastrana, Spain.

From Washington, the Pastrana Tapestries will travel to the Meadows Museum, Dallas, Texas (February 5–May 13, 2012); the San Diego Museum of Art (June 10–September 9, 2012); and the Indianapolis Museum of Art (October 5, 2012–January 6, 2013). The exhibition was made possible through the support of the governments of Spain, Belgium, and Portugal.

Oktoberfest from German to USA

Hello!

What’s Oktoberfest?

Zazzle has featured Oktoberfest products in front page. We don't have this kind of celebration in Portugal. So I went to Wikipedia for some facts. For me it Oktoberfest just meant beer and music! I realized that it takes place not in German only.

Oktoberfest is a 16–18 day festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running from late September to the first weekend in October. (In German, "Oktober" means October, and "Fest", means party or festival). It’s the world’s largest fair – 5 million of people go there every year. It has been held since 1810.

The festival is held in an area named the Theresienwiese (field, or meadow, of Therese), often called Wiesn for short, located near Munich's center. Only beer which is brewed within the city limits of Munich is allowed to be served in this festival. Beer was first served in glass mugs in 1892. Visitors may also enjoy a wide variety of traditional food. If you go to German know how to ask for it:

- Hendl (chicken)

- Schweinebraten (roast pork)

- Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock)

- Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick)

- Würstl (sausages)

- Brezn (Pretzel)

- Knödel (potato or bread dumplings)

- Kasspatzn (cheese noodles)

- Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes)

- Sauerkraut or Blaukraut (red cabbage)

Traditional visitors wear during the Oktoberfest Bavarian hats (Tirolerhüte), which contain a tuft of goat hair. The more tufts of goat hair on your hat, the wealthier you are considered to be.

To keep the Oktoberfest, and especially the beer tents, friendly for older people and families, until 6:00 pm, the tents only play quiet music. Only after that will Schlager and pop music be played. The music played in the afternoon is limited to 85 decibels. With these rules, the organizers of the Oktoberfest were able to curb the over-the-top party mentality and preserve the traditional beer tent atmosphere.

The Oktoberfest is known as the Largest Volksfest (People's Fair) in the World. This festival was first held to honor Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Then German immigrants brought the tradition with them to the United States. Lots of places like Leavenworth in the USA also celebrate Oktoberfest. Check this site for La Crosse 's annual autumn festival or Cincinnati's . In Brazil it’s also popular at Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Ceará, and São Paulo.

I selected some Oktoberfest Zazzle products to help you get in the spirit!
