Autumn is here and so it's time to start thinking about Halloween! 

I must say that I don't have any Halloween party invitations on my Zazzle store. I know I have a postcard there and maybe a magnet with a little witch. But after finding all these wonderful works I really think it's hard to draw something original and really fresh - there are lots of cute, scary, funny, horrible and awesome Halloween Party Invitations on Zazzle, in fact, I was having trouble to stop my research! Portuguese Pastrana Tapestries Exhibition in USA

The National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. is where you can watch The Invention of Glory: Afonso V and the Pastrana Tapestries. The Pastrana Tapestries will remain at the museum from September 18, 2011, through January 8, 2012. They are among the finest Gothic tapestries in the world. They were made to commemorate the conquest of two strategically located cities in Morocco by the king of Portugal, Afonso V (1432–1481).

The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery and the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, Madrid in association with the embassies of Spain and Portugal, the Spain-USA Foundation, and with the cooperation of the embassies of Belgium and Morocco in Washington, DC, as well as the Diocese of Sigüenza-Guadalajara and the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, Pastrana, Spain.


From Washington, the Pastrana Tapestries will travel to the Meadows Museum, Dallas, Texas (February 5–May 13, 2012); the San Diego Museum of Art (June 10–September 9, 2012); and the Indianapolis Museum of Art (October 5, 2012–January 6, 2013). The exhibition was made possible through the support of the governments of Spain, Belgium, and Portugal.

Oktoberfest from German to USA

What’s Oktoberfest?

Zazzle has featured Oktoberfest products in front page. We don't have this kind of celebration in Portugal. So I went to Wikipedia for some facts. For me it Oktoberfest just meant beer and music! I realized that it takes place not in German only.

Oktoberfest is a 16–18 day festival held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany, running from late September to the first weekend in October. (In German, "Oktober" means October, and "Fest", means party or festival). It’s the world’s largest fair – 5 million of people go there every year. It has been held since 1810.

The festival is held in an area named the Theresienwiese (field, or meadow, of Therese), often called Wiesn for short, located near Munich's center. Only beer which is brewed within the city limits of Munich is allowed to be served in this festival. Beer was first served in glass mugs in 1892. Visitors may also enjoy a wide variety of traditional food. If you go to German know how to ask for it:


- Hendl (chicken)

- Schweinebraten (roast pork)

- Schweinshaxe (grilled ham hock)

- Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick)

- Würstl (sausages)

- Brezn (Pretzel)

- Knödel (potato or bread dumplings)

- Kasspatzn (cheese noodles)

- Reiberdatschi (potato pancakes)

- Sauerkraut or Blaukraut (red cabbage)

Traditional visitors wear during the Oktoberfest Bavarian hats (Tirolerhüte), which contain a tuft of goat hair. The more tufts of goat hair on your hat, the wealthier you are considered to be.


To keep the Oktoberfest, and especially the beer tents, friendly for older people and families, until 6:00 pm, the tents only play quiet music. Only after that will Schlager and pop music be played. The music played in the afternoon is limited to 85 decibels. With these rules, the organizers of the Oktoberfest were able to curb the over-the-top party mentality and preserve the traditional beer tent atmosphere.


The Oktoberfest is known as the Largest Volksfest (People's Fair) in the World. This festival was first held to honor Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. Then German immigrants brought the tradition with them to the United States. Lots of places like Leavenworth in the USA also celebrate Oktoberfest. Check this site for La Crosse 's annual autumn festival or Cincinnati's . In Brazil it’s also popular at Santa Catarina, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Ceará, and São Paulo.

Popular ice cream brands in Portugal





  

OMG, I can't believe that next week summer will end and that I just bought myself a new bikini...! Last week I got lucky enough to watch the marés vivas - some photos here - at the beach for the first time. Huge waves, quite a show. Ice cream is something we associate to summer. I want to tell you about the portuguese ice creams. It will be a sweet post!

I am not sure but I think this video is a collage of Olá Ice cream commercials. They still use the old logo. Olá is the most popular ice cream brand in Portugal. Olá began to manufacture ice cream in 1959. Portuguese do not eat a lot of ice cream. In Europe, my country is second with lower consumption. Finland consumes lots of ice cream as a dessert especially and it's at the topo of the list. The country that consumes more ice cream in the world is the USA. You can find it everywhere.

But beyond this brand, there are several smaller brands that have great quality and that built quite a reputation. If you visit Portugal you must try Santini ice creams - il gelati piú fino del mondo - and Gelvi. You can find Santini ice cream in Lisbon, Cascais, and Estoril. If you're in Algarve the place you must visit is Olhão.

Gelvi is a regional business that has passed down from generation to generation. I know that many of you might consider visiting Algarve. It's there you will find the factory and place to try Gelvi ice creams at the Olhão "Mercado” building opposite to Ria Formosa. Gelvi ice creams use Algarve regional fruit like oranges, lemons, blackberries, strawberries, and almonds. Recipes are updated to please more demanding customers but the fabrication process remains faithful to its origins. They created ice cream with the flavor of the traditional Algarve sweet, Dom Rodrigo. 

And now I think I'll go out and buy me ice cream! Or two! (Before summer ends.)
